Melanesian Mission Online Supporter Events – Vanuatu the Forgotten Islands
MMUK’s Katie Drew has just returned from making a pilgrimage to Vanuatu, visiting Anglican churches, schools, the Mothers’ Union and the Melanesian Brotherhood. It was in Vanuatu that John Coleridge Patteson, gave the first Holy Communion to local people, and where the first Anglican village was established. Today there are two of the ten Anglican Church of Melanesia Dioceses in Vanuatu.
Reflecting on her visit, Katie said: “We are familiar with the Anglican Church in Solomons, but not so much about the Anglican Church in Vanuatu. On my recent trip I was able to appreciate the significance of the church’s history here and see how it is flourishing through the expanding church network, oversubscribed church schools, and the work of the Mothers’ Union and the Melanesian Brotherhood. I was also reminded that Vanuatu is one of the world’s most vulnerable countries concerning climate and so-called natural disasters. On my visit I saw how communities were still recovering from the two category-four cyclones it experienced last year.
“Later this month I will be hosting online events where I will share Vanuatu’s Christian joys and also its challenges. I do hope you will join me online on Monday 29th April at 7pm – 8pm or the following day Tuesday 30th April 10am – 11am. For more details, please send an email to mission@mmuk.net. Many thanks.”
