Diocese of Central Melanesia Opens 22nd Diocesan Synod

The Diocese of Central Melanesia (DoCM) has officially opened its 22nd Diocesan Synod, bringing together clergy and lay representatives from across the Diocese for a time of worship, fellowship, reflection and discernment.
Held from 19 to 24 July 2026 and hosted by Christ the King Parish, Gilbert Camp, the Synod is guided by the theme:
“Connected and United in Christ for Holistic Growth.”
The gathering began with a retreat and opening Eucharist at St Luke’s Church, Herebae Okwala, providing a spiritual foundation for the week ahead. Delegates then joined in a formal opening ceremony marked by a colourful procession of clergy and representatives from parishes throughout the Diocese, including the Missionary Parish of Rennell and Bellona, alongside parish committees, Synod members and observers.
Around 80 participants are attending this year’s Synod, reflecting the wide geographical reach and diversity of the Diocese
This year’s Synod is particularly significant for Christ the King Parish, which is hosting the Diocesan Synod for the very first time since the parish was established in 1978.

Welcoming delegates, Parish Chairman Mr Charles Maelanga shared a brief history of the parish and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to host such an important diocesan event.
The Assistant Bishop of the Diocese, the Right Reverend Othnielson Gamutu, thanked the parish and its members for their dedication and hard work in preparing for the gathering and ensuring that delegates were warmly welcomed.
A Time for Prayer and Discernment
The Diocese of Central Melanesia is one of the four original dioceses of the Anglican Church of Melanesia, established following the inauguration of the Province in 1975. Today it continues to play a vital role in the life and witness of the Church across Solomon Islands.
During the opening ceremony, the Diocesan Bishop, the Most Reverend Leonard Dawea, Archbishop of the Anglican Church of Melanesia, formally declared the 22nd Diocesan Synod open.
Over the course of the week, members will reflect on the life and mission of the Diocese, consider key matters affecting ministry and governance, and prayerfully discern the way forward for the Church. Synod provides an important opportunity for clergy and lay members to listen to one another, celebrate achievements, address challenges, and seek God’s guidance for the future.
Connected and United in Christ
The theme, “Connected and United in Christ for Holistic Growth,” highlights the Diocese’s desire to strengthen relationships across its communities while nurturing spiritual, social and pastoral development. It recognises that the Church’s growth is not simply about numbers, but about deepening faith, building strong communities, and equipping people to participate fully in God’s mission.
As members gather throughout the week, MMUK joins with friends and supporters in praying for Archbishop Leonard Dawea, Bishop Othnielson Gamutu, the clergy and lay representatives of the Diocese of Central Melanesia. May their conversations be guided by wisdom, unity and the Holy Spirit as they seek to strengthen the Church’s witness and ministry for the years ahead.
