Welcoming Melanesian Teachers to the UK: Learning Together Across Cultures

The Melanesian Mission is planning the first visit of Anglican Church of Melanesia (ACoM) teachers to the UK since 2015. At the request of ACoM, MMUK hopes to bring two inspiring teachers from Solomon Islands to visit schools across England, including schools already linked with their Melanesian partners.
These visits are about much more than observation. They are opportunities for shared learning, mutual encouragement, and deepening relationships across cultures and continents, strengthening both UK and Melanesian schools.
Meet the Visiting Teachers

Gray Maril – St Francis Vaturanga School, Guadalcanal
Gray Maril comes from the remote Polynesian island of Tikopia, one of the most isolated islands in Solomon Islands. He has been a primary school teacher at St Francis Vaturanga School for the past nine years, teaching pupils aged 12 to 13 years.
St Francis Vaturanga is linked with Frodsham Primary School and St John’s Primary School, Bollington, both in the Diocese of Chester. During his visit, Gray is looking forward to seeing how lessons are taught in UK classrooms and to exchanging ideas with teachers and pupils alike.
He is also eager to share his Polynesian culture, particularly traditional dance and storytelling, giving UK pupils a richer understanding of life, faith and community on Tikopia, where resilience, close relationships and care for creation are central to daily life.

Matilda Naomi – Bishop Norman Palmer School, Guadalcanal
Matilda Naomi teaches at Bishop Norman Palmer Secondary School and if from the island of Malaita. She is the Form 6 Co‑ordinator of Studies, as well as a teacher of Accountancy, playing a key role in shaping older students as they prepare for further study or employment.
Her school, which has a pre-school, primary and secondary school, is linked with Feniton Primary School and Tipton St John Primary School in the Diocese of Exeter. Matilda is keen to learn more about:
- How mathematics is taught in UK schools
- How UK schools are organised and led
- Approaches to curriculum planning, assessment and student support
Matilda is also hoping to refresh her training in Christian Distinctiveness and in the teaching of Human Rights, both areas where MMUK has previously supported ACoM educators through tailored training programmes.
Why These Visits Matter
Teacher exchange visits are powerful tools for cross‑cultural learning. For UK schools, welcoming teachers from Melanesia opens young people’s eyes to:
- Global Christianity and lived faith
- Different educational contexts and challenges
- Rich cultures, languages and traditions
- Shared values of compassion, service and community
For Gray and Matilda, observing UK classrooms and engaging with teachers will provide new skills, fresh ideas, and renewed confidence, which they will take back to their schools and wider education networks in Solomon Islands.
The benefits of these visits ripple outward, strengthening partnerships, enriching teaching, and reminding us that education is a global, shared calling.
