The Melanesian Mission UK (MMUK) extends its deepest gratitude to all our supporters for your prayers and generous donations. Thanks to your incredible support, we have reached our target of £10,000 to support the relief work of the Anglican Church in Vanuatu (ACoMV). We will continue to collect donations until Easter to provide ongoing aid, as the church helps those affected to rebuild their lives, homes, schools, and workplaces.

The Crucial Role of the Anglican Church of Melanesia in the Aftermath of the Vanuatu Earthquakes

On December 17, 2024, a devastating 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck near Vanuatu’s capital, Port Vila. Less than 24 hours later, a second 5.5 magnitude earthquake hit, triggering landslides and causing widespread destruction across the island. In the face of this unprecedented disaster, ACoMV emerged as a beacon of hope and resilience.

Immediate Response and Disaster Resilience

The church’s immediate response was a testament to its preparedness and commitment to serving the community. Utilising its extensive network of parishes and training in disaster resilience, ACoMV swiftly identified the most vulnerable individuals and assessed their needs. This rapid assessment enabled the church to formulate and implement an effective action plan to provide immediate relief.

The swift and effective response of ACoMV was significantly bolstered by the generous support of Anglican in Melanesia and international donors, including MMUK. Funds from these donors were instrumental in mobilising resources and delivering essential aid. One of the key elements of this response was the deployment of the mission ship, the Southern Cross, from Solomon Islands to Vanuatu. The ship carried vital supplies, including drinking water, food, and household essentials, to the affected areas.

Ongoing Support and Psychological Assistance

As the immediate relief efforts continue, ACoMV is now focusing on providing long-term support to the affected communities. Recognising the profound psychological impact of the earthquakes, the church is offering psychological support and counselling to help individuals and families cope with their losses. This assistance is crucial in helping the people of Vanuatu rebuild their lives, homes, schools, and workplaces.

The work of ACoMV is far from over. The region continues to face challenges, and the need for support remains critical. The church’s ongoing efforts to provide aid and support to the victims of the earthquakes are a testament to its unwavering commitment to the community. We encourage everyone to continue supporting ACoMV through prayers and donations, as they work tirelessly to bring hope and healing to the people of Vanuatu.

A Prayer for Vanuatu

Heavenly Father,

We remember the people of Vanuatu who are facing immense hardship following the recent earthquakes. We lift up to You the families who have lost loved ones, those who are injured, and the many who have been displaced from their homes.

Lord, we ask for Your comfort and peace to surround them. Grant strength and resilience to those working tirelessly to provide aid and support, especially the Anglican Church of Melanesia and other missions and relief agencies. May their efforts bring hope and healing to the affected communities.

We pray for the provision of clean water, food, and psychological support for the vulnerable, especially women, children, and the disabled. Protect the island from further natural disasters and guide the hands of those rebuilding lives and infrastructure.

In this season of giving, inspire us to act with compassion and generosity. May our contributions, both in prayer and in donations, be a source of blessing and relief to those in need.

We ask this in the name of Your Son, Jesus Christ, who brings light to the darkest of times.

Amen.
