The Anglican Church of Melanesia (ACoM) recently held a landmark symposium to chart a renewed course for its mission in the years ahead. Convened following a resolution at the 2023 General Synod, the gathering brought together church leaders and stakeholders to reflect on past achievements and explore future priorities.

In his keynote address, The Most Reverend Leonard Dawea, Archbishop of Melanesia, described the symposium as a “gift of space” — a rare opportunity for the Church to “talk mission together.” The event aimed to foster open dialogue and assess whether a full mission review is needed to guide ACoM’s evolving role in society.

Guided by History, Focused on the Future

The symposium’s theme, “Looking Back and Looking Ahead,” encouraged participants to celebrate ACoM’s rich legacy while envisioning its future. Archbishop Dawea paid tribute to the Church’s foundations in the Great Commission (Matthew 28:19–20) and the pioneering work of early missionaries. He also highlighted the enduring influence of Bishop Selwyn’s mission principles: making disciples, providing sound instruction, and serving the needy.

ACoM continues to be guided by the Five Marks of Mission of the Anglican Communion, which include evangelism, discipleship, worship, service, and care for creation.

Addressing Today’s Challenges

The symposium addressed several pressing concerns:

  • Mission Effectiveness: Many current programs face challenges due to limited resources and personnel, prompting a call for more practical, community-based mission work.
  • Healthcare and Education: A renewed commitment to re-engage in these sectors, following a 2017 Synod resolution.
  • Membership Decline: Understanding why members are leaving and how to restore spiritual relevance.
  • Social Issues: Tackling problems such as domestic violence, youth crime, environmental degradation, and drug abuse.
  • Partnerships: Strengthening collaboration with government and civil society to address shared concerns.

A Vision for Transformation

Looking ahead, ACoM’s mission will focus on “educating minds, shaping character, and building communities.” The Church envisions a future where its mission transforms lives, uplifts society, and empowers young leaders to shine.

Archbishop Dawea concluded with a call to action: “We are on course on a special and crucial journey of our mission as we stand at the end of an era and begin another.”

A Prayer for the Mission of the Church in Melanesia

Gracious and Eternal God,
We give you thanks for the life and witness of your Church in Melanesia,
for fifty years of faithful service as an autonomous Province,
and for the generations of disciples who have carried your light across the islands.

We remember with gratitude the vision of the early missionaries,
the courage of today’s evangelists,
and the enduring faith of communities shaped by your Word and Spirit.

As ACoM gathers to reflect, renew, and reimagine your mission,
grant them wisdom to discern your will,
courage to face the challenges of our time,
and unity to walk together in love and purpose.

Bless Archbishop Leonard and all who lead and serve in your name.
May their mission continue to transform lives,
build communities, and glorify your name
in Melanesia and throughout the world.

Through Jesus Christ our Lord,
Amen.
